Inspirational student Janelle Eley is one of the millions of teenagers around the world who are forcing people to acknowledge that change must be implemented in the area of women's rights. She and her fellow students printed out flyers and posted them around the Valencia High School campus in a effort to bring awareness to issues such as women's education, women's rights, and sexual violence. While this may seem like a simple project that has little impact, it is quite the opposite. By raising awareness amongst students and in the community, she is a hopeful reminder of the powerful impact today's youth has on the world. It is important to note that anyone can do simple acts like this, because that's what really makes a difference. We support you Janelle! Crime - an action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law (Merriam Webster Dictionary). In some parts of Afghanistan, it is considered a crime for women to leave their husbands or run away from home. How can an act that should be a basic human right be considered criminal and punishable by law? There has been uproar in Afghanistan for change to be implemented to the country's draft penalty code so that women will not be imprisoned or forced to endure "virginity exams" for committing harmless moral crimes. Many girls and women who commit these moral crimes are actually escaping forced marriages or domestic violence by husbands. Even so, these women are unjustly arrested and prosecuted. These moral crimes should not even be considered criminal, and officials and police should instead address the root of why these women are so desperate to escape their home life. Afghanistan will continue to remain a patriarchal country unless people acknowledge that women are too afraid to seek help and have to resort to running away or hiding to escape their abusers.
Click the image below for the original story. The cruel penalty of whipping is horrific enough alone, but used as punishment towards an innocent child blamed for her own rape overrides any notion of humanity and compassion. The heinous crime that surfaced on the internet via cellphone captures the heartbreaking scene of a 14 year old Indian girl tied up and brutally beaten after it was discovered that she failed to speak out about her father raping her. This attracted attention from the village elders of the girl's community, who believed a proper punishment for her painful silence was to be tied up and repeatedly beaten with a branch. The main issues surrounding this situation is that one, the girl was treated as the aggressor rather than the victim, and two, the community failed to prosecute the father and better the situation for the girl. This tragic incident speaks volumes on how violence against women in India remains malignant and prevalent due to failure in reforming misogynistic cultural values. The video also captures the infuriating normalcy of the situation as onlookers stood by and did nothing to help. This story is a perfect example of the consequences that can emerge due to a child being subjected to a poor environment and a patriarchal home life from her first breaths. The world needs to work together to prevent incidents and millions more like this by ensuring that ALL men are taught to respect women and ALL women are born into a just environment where they are protected.
